YAA spotlights Photography by John Williams and Sherrie Powell

YAA Spotlight

The Yaquina Art Association’s spotlight show will feature the photographs of John Williams and Sherrie Powell.  The showing will begin Saturday March 31 and run for two weeks to Friday April 13th.  The Gallery is located at the foot of the Nye beach turnaround at 789 NW Beach Dr.  Hours are 11am to 4pm daily.

John’s photography reflects his attraction to coastal subjects having growing up in a commercial fishing family on the Mendocino Coast of California.  In the late 50’s artists began coming to Mendocino to settle and display their wares at galleries around the town and John was able to take a wide variety of classes from many of them. John became interested in photography in his teens but it was observing Ansel Adams photographing the Coast of Mendocino County that really influenced him.  The techniques that Adams used changed the way John approaches his own picture making.  After a 40 year career as an Electrical Engineer he is able to devote his time to photography and the other major artistic interest as a woodturner.  He has been turning wood for more than 30 years and many of his turnings are on display in the crafts section of the YAA gallery as well.

For many years Sherrie Powell and her husband enjoyed vacationing on the Oregon Coast. When they retired 6 years ago they had the opportunity to relocate. Without hesitation they decided on the Newport area. Since then Sherrie has been captivated by the beauty that surrounds her. From the ocean beaches and our fishing fleet to the forests, wildlife and birds she’s on a quest to capture it all through her lens. She never tires of photographing this beauty so she can share it with others. Occasionally she has opportunities to travel and uses those opportunities to capture images that create diversity in her body of work. Her photographs have won several awards and have been accepted into international competition. Her work can be seen at the Yaquina Arts Association Gallery, The Pop Up Art World Gallery in the Salem Center Mall, The Fat Mermaid, and on Sundays at the Lincoln City Farmers and Crafters Market.
