YAA Spotlight

Wallace Kaufman’s passion for learning the ways of local wildlife produces amazing images of birds and beasts in their natural habitats.

As a lifelong student of nature who resides on 17 acres surrounded by forest and Yaquina Bay marshland, he observes life with a science writer’s eye and a hunter’s skill, but shoots only with cameras, often from a kayak. Kaufman says that to get a truly good image of an animal in motion, you must anticipate how the animal moves and know its habits. Shooting only begins the work that goes on to selecting composition, contrasts, color corrections and more. The goal is always to represent the wonder and actual lives of the elk, seals, birds and other local wildlife.

He says, “I have feasted at the banquet of opportunities in my life.” From his childhood in Queens, NY he was drawn to stories of animals, and his love for wildlife has not diminished.

Kaufman went on to teach literature at Chapel Hill, Duke, Bucknell and elsewhere. His interest in land use, economics, and environment led him to work as a journalist and business consultant in Siberia and an economic researcher for the World Bank in Central Asia and eastern Europe. In Kazakhstan, as resident advisor on housing and land reform he helped the country as it privatized housing and created the necessary support systems. He has also served as president of 3 statewide environmental groups in North Carolina and on the boards of several land trusts. Along the way he began to mediate conflicts in property and land use. He continues to provide pro bono mediation in the county court.

Wallace Kaufman has written  & published hundreds of articles for popular magazines and newspapers and websites. He co-authored a sci fi novel and is co-author with his daughter of a volume on invasive plants in North America. He also is a widely published poet.

As a photographer and writer he often accompanies images with words that inspire a deeper experience. See www.OregonNaturally.com.

Kaufman is an active member of Yaquina Art Association and the Yaquina Art Association Photographers (yaaphotographers.org) where he continues to hone his skills.
