YAA Spotlight

In a two week Wall Spotlight Show from July 7th to July 20th, the Yaquina Art Association will be featuring the artwork of John Bradley and Luella Hartwell . The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive. Hours of operation are 11 am to 5 pm every day.

Watercolor Artist John Bradley believes anyone can be a good artist, if given the time,”l started later in life after I more or less retired,” he said. Before that, Bradley was a dentist working in Concord, Calif. He and his wife later moved to Eugene, then Waldport. “I always wanted to paint, but when you’re working it doesn’t work out very well to want to paint at night,” he said. “l’ve tried it.” “Now, I’ve got all the time in the world and I paint about four times a week and enjoy it very much,” he said.

Most of Bradley’s paintings are landscapes, often inspired by the Oregon Coast. They range in size but tend to be about 22 by 28 inches. He paints them flat on a table, as opposed to up on an easel, and can finish about one per day.

Because he has so many originals, Bradley long since stopped making prints of his work. His originals hang in homes as far away as Ireland, France and Wisconsin.

Bradley is a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon and the Yaquina Art Association. He’s also taken part in juried exhibits and gallery shows up and down the coast. “l think almost anybody can do good watercolors, if they’re really persistent and do it long enough,” he said. His passion for watercolors has led him to enroll in numerous art classes since retiring and also taken him to southern France several times to take watercolor workshops.

In April 2018, John was presented with an Award of Distinction from the Watercolor Society of Oregon at their spring convention in Florence.  Come see the colorful, imaginative paintings that have been such fun to create.

Luella Hartwell has been a resident of Seal Rock for the past 20 years and has been teaching art through Yaquina Art Association in Newport and Artists Studio Association in Lincoln City.

Luella enjoys depicting the ocean in a variety of mediums.  Her spotlight show includes acrylics, inks, pastels and watercolors.  She has enjoyed the 21 years that she has lived in Seal Rock for it’s endless sources of inspiration.
