SPOTLIGHT SHOW:  Sylvia A. Hosie and Charlotte Carter June 11 through June 24

YAA Spotlight

Sylvia A. Hosie and Charlotte Carter will present a 2 week Spotlight Show at the Yaquina Art Center featuring both photography and paintings in watercolor, pastel and mixed media.  This two week show runs from June 11 to June 24th at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery at 789 NW Beach Drive in Newport.  The gallery is open to the public from 11 am to 5 pm. Both Hosie and Carter are members of the Yaquina Art Association.

Sylvia Hosie will be showing recent work along the Oregon coastline in both color and black and white images.  Locations include Yaquina Head, Thor’s Well, Bandon Beach and Neskowin’s Ghost Forest.  “I began as a black and white photographer and have returned to this treatment more and more to express my interpretation of certain scenes“ says Hosie.

Another new direction for Hosie is taking her horse portraits and simplifying the backgrounds with layered images of texture.  “I’m just beginning to explore this photographic art form and it is great fun, but can also be at times frustrating.”  Also included in the show are her Western scenes printed on wood. Professional memberships for Hosie include the Toledo Arts Guild, Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest, and the Portland Photographic Society.  Locally her work is found at the Yaquina Art Center on the Nye Beach Turnaround.  Her website is sylviahosiephotography.com.

Charlotte Carter worked as an artist and illustrator for many years. Now she is retired and paints for a hobby. Charlotte teaches a free ongoing class in Pastel every Thursday from 10 am to 12:30 pm in the upstairs classroom at The Newport Visual Arts Center, at 777 NW Beach Dr. Newport, Oregon. (541) 265-6540.  The class is open to people with all levels of artistic background are welcome to drop into class. Charlotte’s one requirement for people attending class is that they come prepared to play and have fun drawing with pastels.

Carter paints about living and changing things, like plants, flowers, vegetables, animals and people, landscapes, seascapes and the sky in special fleeting moments. Her paintings show atmospheric moods in light, shadow and changing color. Charlotte uses a camera to record nature’s unique fleeting moments and capture details, and then she incorporates them in her paintings. Her painting style could be called “expressionistic impressionism.”
